Photograph, Elizabeth Williams

Library book, British Institute at Amman for Archeology and History, Jordan

'This creature Man, who in his own selfish affairs is a coward to the backbone, will fight for
an idea like a hero.' (1)

Recently, photographic artists and theoreticians have examined strategies used in the representation of other cultures during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. This involved
re-assessing photographs held in museum archives through a critical stance towards the authority of 'Realism' as photographic truth. If documentary photographs didn't always represent 'the truth', but instead gave a rather one-sided and often very biased narrative, what sort of photographs could speak about identity?

Quoted by Cherry-Garrard, The Worst Journey in the World- Scott's last expedition to the South Pole (1922)
