The index page provides a general introduction to the content of the website. Select GO to enter the website.

There are three categories of pages: home, search and help. Each category provides links on the left to sub-pages within the category. If there is more than one page within a category, it will be listed by number and and linked at the base of the page.
The home pages and links provide information about the making of 'Wanderings' including a map of travel.
The search page and links provide a method to find photographs through use of keywords, place names and categories. Also there are links to index of keywords, subjects, titles, bibliography, Xtra archive, how to buy a photograph, send a web-message or contact through email.
The help page and links provide help in finding a photograph, buying a photograph, navigation, answers to questions, copyright, plan of site map, information about the author, credits and contact.

Keyword search

The keyword search is found on the search page.
Each photograph has keywords assigned to it in the database.
Type words in the text box which describe the photograph you are searching for, placing a comma after each word and select SUBMIT to view small, 'thumbnail' images of all the photographs bearing your keywords. Click a 'thumbnail' image to view a larger image with text information, click again to see a full size image without text.
Keywords do not contain aesthetic descriptions (colour, tone, texture etc.) but do contain subject titles, categories, names (place, people, groups) and other information such as time of day (morning, evening, sunrise, sunset etc.) or weather conditions (snow, sand storm etc.) if relevant.

Place search

The place search is found on the search page.
Each photograph has a place description assigned to it.
Places are described by their country, or region within a country, for example- Namaqualand, South Africa.
On the search page, select your place in the text box and then SUBMIT.
The text boxes are pre-defined, therefore you will always have a result from your selection. You will be able to view the photographs as small, 'thumbnail' images. Click on the 'thumbnail' image to view a larger image and text information, click again to view a full size image without text.

You may use the keyword, place and category search together.

Category search

The category search is found on the search page.
Each photograph has categories assigned to it.
Use the image search on the search page by selecting subject categories in the text boxes. The categories are further divided into types within the category which you can choose to refine your search. Click SUBMIT to view all photographs your chosen category or type.
You will be able to view the photographs as small, 'thumbnail' images. Click on the 'thumbnail' image to view a larger image and text information, click again to view a full size image without text.

You may use the keyword, place and category search together.

Index

The index lists are found through the links on the left of the search page.
The index pages provide lists of all keywords, subjects and titles of photographs in the archive. There are also index lists of some of the books the author consulted (bibliography) and a list of titles of photographs in the Xtra archive.

Page view

Some website browsers allow you to make changes to the way you view the page. Here are some tips for Internet Explorer and Netscape about simple changes that may help you view the site.

Font and type size

For improved visibility you may be able to increase (or decrease) the size of text and alter the choice of font.

Internet Explorer users
1. Open your 'Internet Options' window by going to 'View' (or 'Tools' if you have it) and scrolling down.
2. Choose 'Fonts' and select your preferred style, alphabet and size, then click 'OK'.
3. Go to 'Accessibility' within 'Internet Options' and click on 'Ignore font styles/font sizes specified on Web pages.'
4. When you click 'OK', this should ensure that the page you are viewing now appears with your specifications.

Netscape /Mozilla / Firefox users
1. To increase font size, go to 'View' and then choose 'Increase Font' as many times as you find necessary for the size you want.
2. To change the type of font, go to 'Preferences', 'Appearance', 'Fonts' and choose 'Use my default fonts, overriding document-specified fonts'. This will ensure that the set fonts are ignored by your browser.

Colour of text and background
You may require specific colours in order to be able to view the site easily.

Internet Explorer Users
1. Go to 'Internet Options' (as above) and choose 'Colors'.
2. You can change text and background page colour as well as the colour
in which links appear, then click 'OK'.
3. Choose 'Accessibility' from within 'Internet Options' and click on 'Ignore colors specified on Web pages'.
4. When you click 'OK', this should ensure that the page you are viewing now appears with your specifications.

Netscape Users
Go to 'Preferences', 'Appearance', 'Colors' and choose 'Always use my colors, overriding document', then specify your colours.

Xtra archive

Access is through index Xtra link on the left of the search page.
This archive contains documentary, 'background' photographs to the main 'Wanderings' archive. You can view subjects such as photographs of the guides, the author, site camps, Bedouin, Nama and Sami people, monasteries, landscapes etc. All Xtra photographs are available to buy and hold the same copyright as the main 'Wanderings' archive.
The Xtra archive is not available through the main search.
It is ONLY available through entering the search page link and selecting a photograph title in index Xtra.
